Afternoon Session: Joomla for Developers

This is a half-day workshop run by Louis Landry, one of the senior architects for the Joomla source (and Mambo before it) and one a select group of people in the world who are experienced enough to know how to push Joomla beyond the envelope.

This class is designed to follow-on from the morning session when Anthony Ferrara will provide an introduction to the 1.5 API. Andrew will be walking you through the ins and out of designing and deploying extensions.  He will overview the MVC theory behind building a component, how to build modules with multiple layout support, the "easy" way to build you language files, and the basic mechanics of templates that every graphically challenged developer should be aware of.  He will also give an overview of the types of plugins that are available and when and where each can be used, and also look at how to deploy each extension type for sharing.

This workshop will be a great introduction to developing in Joomla if you are wanting to get started (but it all looks too scary), if Joomla is mission critical to your organisation and you are wanting to go deeper supporting it, or if you are providing customisation and/or development services as a business to others.

How long is the class?

3 hours.

What do I need to bring?

No materials will be required but a laptop with your editor of choice and a running Joomla site is desirable so you can follow along.

Do I need any technical knowledge?

Basic programming skills will be required and there is an expectation that you can read programming and markup languages such as PHP, Javascript and HTML.

Do I need to know anything about Joomla?

You should be familiar with installation and the basic usage of Joomla to deliver Web site solutions for either yourself or others.
